Forfar Athletic suffered a disappointing defeat on Saturday as they were hammered 4-0 by Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park.

The Kirkcaldy side led at half-time through Kevin Nisbet and goals from Chris Duggan and a Lewis Vaughan double completed the scoring to hand the Loons their second league defeat of the season.

Rovers’ Nathan Flanagan had chances early on as he struck a free kick at Marc McCallum before seeing an effort deflected wide.

The Loons’ first chance fell to Ross Meechan as he curled into the arms of Kieran Wright in the ninth minute.

Three minutes later Flanagan was involved again as he blasted over from a Grant Gillespie corner.

Jamie Bain fired wide from distance before Aidan Wilson headed over after connecting with Thomas Reilly’s corner.

Forfar could have had a penalty in the 26th minute as John Baird played the ball into the box and Bain appeared to be pushed by Kevin Nisbet but the ref waved play on.

The two were involved at the other end just sixty seconds later; Bain’s weak ball back to McCallum allowed Nisbet to race in and beat the keeper to the ball and divert it into an empty net.

Despite Rovers taking the lead, Forfar had chances to equalise following this as Meechan, Reilly and Baird all fired over before Lewis Moore forced a save from Wright.

Dylan Easton saved the Loons on the stroke of half-time when another Gillespie corner found Euan Murray and his header was cleared off the line by the winger.

Six minutes into the second half Raith brought on Lewis Vaughan for his first appearance of the season and this seemed to fully turn the game in Raith’s favour as just a minute later he was on the scoresheet.

It was three in the 56th minute as a long ball caught the Loons defence sleeping and Duggan capitalised on a McCallum slip to lob him.

Liam Buchanan was denied by McCallum before the Loons created their first chances of the second half.

Sub Dale Hilson fired over from a distance while John Baird did find the net but his goal was chalked off due to offside.

Rovers added their fourth in the 68th minute as the Loons failed to clear their lines with Vaughan getting his second of the afternoon.

Baird saw three efforts fly over the bar late on with the final chance falling to Bain as he fired wide.

A disappointing result for the Loons but Jim Weir will try to lift their spirits ahead of their game against Arbroath in a fortnight.
