Ian Watson

Friday, 12 October 2018 09:23

Many long-standing ‘Loons’ fans would have been saddened to hear of the sudden death in Perth Royal Infirmary last weekend of former Supporters Club official Ian Watson.

Ian was born in the late forties into a strong Forfar Athletic supporting family, his father Jock and uncle Will both staunch members of the Supporters Club committee and both going on to serve as Board Members on differing occasions, Will also being the club’s groundsman for many a year.

Ian’s mother Nellie was also heavily involved on match days at Station Park, in charge of boardroom hospitality etc.

During the sixties, seventies and early eighties, in particular, Ian at the time an electrician in the town was actively involved within the club having a short spell as Secretary of the Supporters Club and also a very active Supporters Bus Convenor.

However, his biggest contribution to the club was undoubtedly as the driving force behind the installation of the first floodlighting system at Station Park completed in the autumn of 1971 and he was a pretty proud ‘Loon’ when Aberdeen FC supplied the opposition in the official opening fixture under the lights in October of that year.

Ian moved to Perth to live many years back but maintained a keen interest in Athies affairs and was a season ticket holder up to last season.

The sympathies of all connected with Forfar Athletic Football Club are extended to his wife Nancy and family at this sad time.

Ian’s funeral is private at his own request.
