Arbroath 2 Forfar Athletic 0

Sunday, 11 March 2018 12:30

Forfar Athletic lost their first game in three as they slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Angus rivals Arbroath.

Goals in each half from Thomas O’Brien and Leighton McIntosh meant that the Loons failed to pick up a point in derbies this season, scoring just once.

The Loons have now won just once in their last sixteen Angus derbies with the Lichties, Brechin City and Montrose, the only win in those games coming last February against Saturday’s opponents.

Two changes were made from the draw with Queen’s Park; the suspended Eddie Malone and injured Mark Millar replaced by Michael Travis and Andy Munro.

With the weather in Gayfield horrendous, the game was never likely to be a classic and this showed with just one clear effort on goal inside the first half hour as Bobby Linn dragged his shot well wide.

Blair Yule headed wide from a Ricky Little cross before former Loon Danny Denholm forced a good save from Marc McCallum in the 35th minute.

From the resulting corner the hosts had the ball in the net but it was ruled out with Gavin Duncan booking Ryan Wallace for handball.

Seven minutes later Greg Hurst thought he had scored for the Loons in their only shot of the game after a Russell Dingwall through ball; the on loan attacker was judged to have been offside.

The Lichties took the lead on the stroke of half time when Thomas O’Brien nodded home a free kick against his former side.

In the second half Wallace and Mark Whatley failed to trouble McCallum before the hour mark while the Loons struggled to create anything with a strong Arbroath defence in front of them.

Whatley then blasted over the bar and the Lichties captain forced a save from McCallum as the game entered the final stages.

The three points were sealed for Arbroath with two minutes remaining; Denholm’s corner was stabbed home by sub Leighton McIntosh.

The result means Forfar drop to ninth with a tough week ahead of them against the league’s top two sides.
