Forfar Athletic kept a fourth clean sheet in a row after a comfortable 2-0 win over Stenhousemuir at Station Park.

Quickfire goals from John Baird and Murray Mackintosh sent the Loons up to third in League One with seven points from four games.

Visitors Stenhousemuir had the first opportunity of the game three minutes in when Sean Dickson sent a low and weak effort at Marc McCallum.

Three minutes later the Loons forced a corner and following this Jamie Bain could only volley wide from the edge of the box.

Alan Cook blasted over shortly after for the Warriors before Murray Mackintosh saw his drive deflected past the post.

John Baird had two fantastic chances to give the Loons the lead but couldn’t find the target on either occasion.

He made up for these in the 29th minute when Jamie Bain was played through on goal and he unselfishly squared it for Baird to tap into the empty net.

Just six minutes later the Loons had doubled their advantage after some excellent harrying won them the ball and Mackintosh played a neat one-two with Lewis Moore before slotting home for his first senior goal.

In the second half, Mark McGuigan could have done better as he fired wide before the Loons took control of the game once again.

Thomas Reilly volleyed over while Bain sent a curling free-kick into the grateful arms of Graeme Smith.

Connor Coupe and Lewis Moore were linking up well in attack and the pair were involved in the 63rd minute as the former hassled the Warriors defence before squeezing the ball out to the latter but his effort couldn’t hit the target.

Moore was denied by Smith as the game entered the final stages and Stenhousemuir improved following their substitutions with Alan Cook seeing his shot blocked by the defence.

Gary Fraser and Mackintosh were unable to add to the Loons’ tally but the visitors came very close to a late consolation as McGuigan created space before cutting back for Colin McMenamin, however he screwed his shot past the post.

The result takes Forfar up to third in the league and they will face second placed Raith Rovers on Saturday at Stark’s Park.
