The ‘Loons’ welcome Elgin City to the Parkgrove Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday, a match which heralds the beginning of the second quarter of the William Hill League2 campaign.
Manager Jim Weir is well aware of how important the nine games that lie ahead prior to the return fixture with City in late December are; this set of fixtures features five home games for the Athies, a quintet of matches in which it is to be hoped the good form shown to date in front of their own supporters will continue.
First and foremost, however, Jim and his squad will attempt to recover from last week’s disappointing end result at Dumbarton. The manager and his staff were delighted with many aspects of the overall performance against the ‘Sons.’
However, a ten-minute period when concentration on the job in hand seemed to waver, and one or two bad decisions were made defensively, cost the ‘Loons’ dearly.
Jim commented that there was so much to be pleased about in the overall performance, and those pleasing aspects must be on show for ninety-plus minutes on Saturday afternoon.
The manager is delighted with the manner in which his squad is developing with the injury situation clearing up week on week, and it was noticeable that the substitutes introduced throughout the final stages of last Saturday’s contest all made a contribution of some note.
Back to the injury front, Jake Dolzanski is still ruled out, but on the plus side Craig Mailer returns to the match day squad. It is also hoped that Craig Slater will return to full training at next Thursday’s session.
Amazingly, our opponents on Saturday for the second time this season against the ‘Loons’ go into the contest on the back of a high-scoring success. Back in August, Stefan Laird’s side had just beaten Edinburgh City 5-0, while this time round they head south on the back of a 6-2 drubbing of league leaders Clyde at Borough Briggs last weekend.
On the day against Darren Young’s table-topping outfit, all six goals came in the second period, with six different City players on target.
That result saw the Morayshire outfit move into a top four placing in the league table, three points better off than the ‘Loons.’
The early season clash between the sides up north ended in a 1-1 draw, Kyle Girvan giving the home side the lead, Scott Shepherd netting the equaliser late in the first period.
Following Saturday’s contest, it will be a case of ‘hit the road’ for the home side, with four away games now scheduled in three different competitions prior to a visit on the first Saturday in November from Edinburgh City.
A home win will be just the tonic before Dingwall becomes the first ‘port of call’ on Tuesday evening of next week.
Saturday’s referee is Ross Birrell, who will be making his Station Park debut as a man in the middle.
C’mon the ‘Loons.’
