Forfar Athletic 2 Montrose 1
[Sunday, 16 December 2018 10:51]
The ‘Loons’ finally managed to secure a three point haul in a local derby with a 2-1 win over Montrose at Station Park yesterday afternoon in fairly dire overhead conditions.
The game was only given the go ahead twenty minutes before the scheduled kick-off time and it was to the credit of all the players and the match officials that they competed in and completed a highly entertaining contest.
Montrose totally dominated the first half hour of the proceedings despite playing against the elements and deservedly took the lead in the 8th minute with a Martin Rennie spot-kick.
However once the home side equalised with a spectacular strike from Dale Hilson in the 36th minute, in fairness in one of their first meaningful attacks of the game it was a different story.
The Athies definitely edged the second period in the biting wind and rain and deservedly netted the winner with ten minutes remaining. Hilson was again the scorer after good lead up play which ended with an inch perfect John Baird pass to Dale who gave Alan Fleming no chance from eight yards out.
The players apart a pat on the back to the 592 spectators who braved the elements and were vociferous in their support of their respective teams. You all deserved a medal!
