PREVIEW
Forfar Athletic bring the curtain down on what we all have to admit has not been the greatest year in the club’s history by welcoming Stirling Albion to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday in their ninth home league fixture of the current campaign.
There is little doubt that the ‘Loons’ management staff and players will be going all out to end the year on a winning note, at the same time building on the home momentum build up over the recent clashes with Bonnyrigg and Peterhead. The Athies do go into the game however on the back of a 2-0 defeat last weekend at New Douglas Park. Reflecting on that result and performance against Clyde, Jim Weir again expressed his disappointment that the players did not glean some reward from the fixture, especially considering the possession they had and the chances created but sadly not converted.
However we move on to the visit of the ‘Binos’ and like most if not all part-time clubs there is no resting place over the festive season. The squad were put through their paces at Station Park on the mornings of Christmas Eve and Boxing Day due in part to the unavailability of training venues elsewhere during the holiday period and Jim was delighted with the attitude of the squad on both occasions.
Certainly one cannot question the commitment of the players, some of whom will have clocked up 600 miles of travelling in the ‘Loons’ cause this week alone by the time they arrive home from Saturday’s contest.
There will be two notable absentees from the match day line-up tomorrow. Nathan Cannon serves a one match suspension due to receiving his sixth yellow card of the season against Peterhead, while Ross MacLean is also ruled out.
The ‘Binos’ were of course our opponents in a classic Scottish Cup tie just four weeks back and will head north no doubt keen for revenge. Alan Maybury’s side’s form since the cup tie has been mixed and they currently sit in fifth position in the league table. Defeats away to Bonnyrigg and at home to Edinburgh City were followed by an excellent 4-2 win up at Elgin, a 1-1 draw the outcome of Stranraer’s visit to Forthbank on Saturday past.
Albion triumphed 2-1 in the previous league meeting between the sides on their home territory back in early October.
The man in the middle on Saturday is George Calder, a frequent visitor to Station Park last term.
Despite the fact that the ‘Loons’ will finish the year in tenth spot in the league table, there is an air of optimism as we head into 2025 amongst all concerned within the club, especially the fans who have backed the club superbly in recent times. Hopefully that optimism will be rewarded with a three point haul on Saturday. One thing that is a certainty, the Forfar Athletic players will be giving their all as ever in that quest.
C’mon the ‘Loons’
