PREVIEW
The ‘Loons’ return to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday when high flying Elgin City will be the visitors on William Hill League2 duty.
Forfar has been lucky all week with no snowfall whatsoever and groundsman Martin Gray has worked tirelessly to keep the 3G playing surface fit for action both for ‘Athies’ training sessions and community use, this despite frosty overnight conditions. At present on Friday morning, tomorrow’s eagerly anticipated contest is not in any doubt and no pitch inspection is planned unless condition deteriorate.
Manager Jim Weir is certainly keen to get the game played. He has no fresh injury worries to report, Ross MacLean the only absentee from his match day squad, although he will be available for the cup tie next weekend.
Jim was of course delighted to bring Craig Slater back to the club earlier in the week, a ‘marquee’ signing as they say these days. The manager commented that Craig apart from being an obvious asset on the park will also have a big presence and influence in the dressing room as a whole going forward. The midfielder goes straight into the pool for Saturday’s clash.
Few changes are expected to a home starting line-up who continue to receive rightly fairly optimistic ‘noises’ despite their current position in the table.
The Athies go into the game on the back of two away defeats and a hard fought home draw against Stirling Albion knowing that victories and with it welcome three point hauls are becoming a necessity. Certainly Saturday would be a good day to start the process with the scheduled fixture between the two teams directly above the ‘Loons’ in the table between Bonnyrigg Rose and Stranraer unlikely to beat the wintry conditions.
As regards Saturday’s opponents, Gavin Price in particular and Jim himself have had recent and happy associations with the Boroughbriggs club. Like many Jim acknowledges the unbelievable season to date that City have had especially considering the injuries to key players in recent times. He therefore knows that a tough examination of the home side’s credentials is once again likely to be the case on Saturday.
Elgin managed by Allan Hale go into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Peterhead two weeks back and with a visit from Aberdeen to look forward to in the cup next weekend. They were also boosted this week with the news that goalkeeper Aidan Glavin and Kian Leslie’s loan spells from Kilmarnock have been extended till the end of the campaign. Russell Dingwall and Mark Gallagher who had loan spells at Station Park from Ross County and Aberdeen respectively were in the Elgin starting line up last time out.
Experienced match official Gavin Duncan will be the man in charge of proceedings.
Hopefully the contest will attract a fair smattering of spectators, the home support as ever an important 12th man from kick-off.
