Young ‘Loons’ go top of table

Forfar Athletic’s Development Squad moved to the top of the SPFL Development League East table for at least 24 hours with a 4-2 win, their fifth on the trot over Berwick Rangers at Station Park last night.
The home side delighted the three figure attendance with some excellent football at times and despite some strong resistance from the visitors in the closing stages, the margin of victory could have been even more decisive.
There was however a shock for the home side on the fifteen minute mark, this after they had dominated the early part of the proceedings.
Visiting striker Grant Rose took advantage of slack clearance to put the ‘Borderers’ into the lead.
However within sixty seconds the scores were level thanks to a brilliant piece of opportunism and an excellent finish from young Ben Starkey.
Both keepers distinguished themselves in the ensuing twenty minutes, 17 year old Jacob Otto in the home goal thwarting the visitors Kieran Jack in particular.
However it was the homesters who took the lead eight minutes before the half time whistle, Matthew Aitken the scorer with a header from a right wing cross.
Within sixty seconds of the re-start, Aitken had set up Michael Kennedy to net number three for the ‘Loons’, Starkey scoring the fourth ten minutes later with a wonder strike from the edge of the box.
Forfar then spurned a good few chances to increase their tally, but the visitors kept fighting and pulled one back from a penalty converted by Scott Sutherland in 79th minute.
The coaching staff on the night would have taken great heart in particular from the performances of some of the younger and less well known members of the squad who without naming individuals put in sterling performances.
Thanks also to the fans who turned up on the night to give the side their backing and encouragement.
The result moves Forfar two points clear of Raith at the top of the table, but the Kirkcaldy outfit are due to play Cowdenbeath tonight.
Rovers are also the ‘Loons’ next opponents, Kelty the venue on Wednesday November 1st.
