Forfar Athletic Under 19's 2 Hamilton Accies Under 19's 5
Forfar Athletic’s Under 19 side were in the end outgunned by a full time Hamilton side in last night’s SFL Youth League Cup Final at Station Park.
However the home players along with coaches Eddie Gray, Arty Gray and Barry Sellars should all be rightly proud in their achievement of becoming the first team representing the club to reach a national final in the ‘Loons’ proud 128 year history.
The youngsters will also no doubt benefit from their cup run and should certainly have gained confidence from their performances in the tournament, especially their magnificent fight back to defeat another full time outfit Livingston in the semi final last week and their never say die attitude in at times adversity as they fell at the final hurdle.
In last night’s match, the visitors raced into a three goal lead through a brace from Andy Ryan and a counter from Eamonn Brophy. Kerr Hay pulled one back for the homesters before Brophy made it 4-1 before the half time whistle sounded.
The home side got a real fillip two minutes into the second period when Hay netted his second of the night and although never looking like they were likely to rest the trophy from Hamilton’s grasp, they suffered disappointment when a deflected Ryan Finnie strike in the 83rd minute made it five on the night for the lads from Douglas Park
The trophy and medals were presented by Scottish Football League Operations Director David Thomson..
Forfar officials were delighted with the attendance of well over 300 on the night which was also a great boost to the players on both sides.
Special mention to ‘Loons’ first team players Martyn Fotheringham and Gavin Swankie who came along to give their younger colleagues their backing.
