PREVIEW
The Loons will make the lengthy trip north to Elgin tomorrow, in what will be our second and final visit of 2024 to Borough Briggs.
Stuart Morrison and his colleagues will be looking to bounce back from the disappointing home defeat to The Spartans, a match which was ultimately Ray McKinnon’s final outing as Loons’ manager.
As advised at the beginning of this week, Mark Whatley and Mark Farrell have stood in to take the wheel on a temporary basis, their assistance in this regard very much appreciated by Loons’ officials. Speaking to the Courier this week, Mark Whatley commented “We need to get the heads down, work hard and make sure individually and collectively we turn up with good quality and positive performances – that gives you the best chance to win at the end of the day.”
“We’ve got a lot of good players in the squad – we’re sitting with a squad that aren’t too far away. Individually, we’ve got players there that we know can turn it around – hopefully we can start by winning at Elgin. We’ve got a game on Saturday where we need to perform and try to get three points to get going a bit”.
We are certain that the interim coaching team and the Loons playing squad can be guaranteed of the backing of the Loons travelling support tomorrow. This support is vital and so much appreciated during this transitional period for the Club.
Our last trip to Morayshire to play Elgin City was back in March, honours even on that occasion – a 1-1 draw in which Craig Thomson cancelled out a Lyall Booth opener.
Allan Hale’s Elgin City were welcome guests to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park back in August, that fixture also ending in a 1-1 draw. On that occasion captain Stuart Morrison equalising for the Loons after another Lyall Booth opener.
Remarkably, Elgin City lost their first game of the League 2 season last weekend, losing 2-0 to Bonnyrigg Rose thanks to goals from Mark Ferrie and former Loons and Elgin City player Angus Mailer.
In terms of League 2 standings, our hosts on Saturday sit in third position and only one point behind league leaders Peterhead. The Loons currently occupy the dreaded ‘Club 42’ position, a matter which the squad will no doubt be seeking to rectify at the earliest possible opportunity.
There is no doubt that this is a difficult time for those of a Loons persuasion and we would only repeat our call for everyone to rally behind the interim coaching team and to show them your support, as of course you always do.
Saturday’s other William Hill League 2 fixtures;- Clyde v East Fife, Peterhead v Edinburgh City, Stranraer v Bonnyrigg Rose, The Spartans v Stirling Albion
C’mon the Loons
