PREVIEW
First and foremost, Loons’ officials wish to extend their thanks to all supporters who made the long journey north to Borough Briggs last Saturday. The interim coaching team and the players were grateful for the support shown to them on the day, and whilst the result did not go our way, please know that your support was very much appreciated.
Looking forward, Loons supporters will have to brave freezing cold conditions tomorrow, as we look to the beginning of Jim Weir’s second stint in charge at Station Park. Indeed, one League 2 fixture has already fallen foul of adverse weather, with Elgin City v Clyde having been called off this afternoon.
An occasion worthy of note for another reason, Loons’ stopper Marc McCallum is expected to make his 300th competitive appearance for Forfar Athletic tomorrow. Such a landmark occasion, that the goalie himself had lost track of when his 300th match would take place! Thankfully Club Historian Barry Stevens was able to confirm the statistic, and the occasion will quite rightly be applauded by supporters tomorrow.
Jim Weir will make a most welcome return to the dugout at Station Park for the first time since November 2019, his last outing also being a home tie – on that occasion against Falkirk. Marc McCallum was between the sticks on that occasion, the final member of that squad still to be competing at Station Park today.
Jim is delighted to return to Forfar Athletic, but equally he is under no illusion regarding the position that we are currently in.
Speaking to the Courier this week, Jim commented “I’m absolutely thrilled as Forfar has always been a club I’ve looked out for since I left. Since then, things haven’t been too great. I felt it was the right time for me and the opportunity came up. I left in unfortunate circumstances and I’ve always felt a bit guilty about that.”
“I’m not a quitter in anything, I’m a fighter and I’m always up for any sort of challenge, as I’ve proven in the past.”
“The league position doesn’t lie. I’ve looked at a lot of the games that we’ve played this season and for me there’s a lot of optimism … Sometimes it takes longer than you anticipate but I expect to hit the ground running with the group of players that are there. I feel I’ve got the experience, the backing and support that can take the club back to a position it should always be.”
“Where we are just now is a position that Forfar as a club and a support don’t deserve and don’t like.”
“It’s my job to make sure we change that.”
The home support tomorrow will no doubt show their backing and support to the manager tomorrow as he looks to do just that.
