The ‘Loons’ of ‘97

Jim Hamilton one of the stalwarts and occasional captain of our promotion winning side of the 1996/7 season and Billy Bennett Assistant Manager of the time have been busy in recent weeks putting in place a WhatsApp group within the squad and backroom staff from that highly successful campaign for the club. This group is intended to be similar in nature to the one set up by the players and officials of the late seventies and early eighties which has led to regular contact within the group and to a few reunion gigs, trips to Station Park, golf outings etc.

Many will recall promotion back in 1997 was clinched on a day of torrential rain in early May with a convincing last day of the campaign home victory over Queens Park to thwart third placed Ross County, champions Inverness Caley-Thistle having been thrashed 4-0 up in the Highland Capital on the previous weekend.

Twenty three players and staff of the time are already in contact and part of the group. However five players from the squad and one important member of the backroom staff have still to be found so to speak. The players concerned are goalkeepers John Donegan and Dean Robertson, defender Ally Gray and forwards Ben Honeyman and Martin McLaughlin along with Jim Peacock an outstanding physio of his generation.
