On this day 140 years ago, Forfar Athletic played their first ever match.
On 16th May 1885 at Station Park, Forfar Athletic defeated Our Boys’ Rangers, Dundee. Wearing black and white hooped jerseys, the Loons began their existence with a 1-0 home win.
Previously Angus Athletic and effectively the second eleven of Angus Football Club, the youngsters were enthusiastic and ambitious. By 1885 the Loons, so known for their youthfulness, were drawing larger crowds than the senior club. They broke away and formed Forfar Athletic, with James Black as Honorary Secretary of the new club.
Could the first ever Forfar Athletic team possibly have imagined what they had started that day?
