Saturday’s victory over a Dundee ‘B’ side saw the ‘Loons’ move into eighth place in the thirty club league table at the midway stage of phase one of the revamped and renamed Challenge Cup competition which seems to be drawing plaudits from all concerned.
Remember that only eight sides drop out at this stage, but the higher you finish in the table at the end of your six matches decides your overall seeding position for the second phase draw, when of course the ten championship clubs enter the fray.
At this stage four teams have maximum points from their three games, namely Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Stenhousemuir, Montrose and Edinburgh City.
Sitting on the seven point mark are Peterhead, East Fife and Dumbarton with the Athies at the head of a group on six points through their superior goal difference following home successes over Hibernian and Dundee’s youngsters.
At present the bottom eight spots are in fact filled by seven of the ‘B’ sides and Annan Athletic, Celtic ‘B’ the best placed currently of the Under 21 sides occupying tenth spot.
All sides have three group stage games left to play, Aberdeen ‘B’ the visitors to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park for the ‘Loons’ next fixture on Tuesday September 23rd.
That game is followed by two clashes with William Hill League1 outfits. Jim Weir’s side entertain Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday October 11th in what looks a mouth watering ninety minutes before making the trip north to Cove on Tuesday November 11th.
Much to look forward to hopefully with the rounds of 32 & 16 in the tournament due in mid December and early January respectively.
