Preview
The ‘Loons’ go head to head with Michael McIndoe’s Edinburgh City side on Saturday afternoon in the first of two consecutive home festive period fixtures in the William Hill League2. The home side will be going all out to pick up their first league victory of the final month of the calendar year, at the same time putting a disappointing second half showing at Annan last weekend to ‘bed.’
Let’s start this preview this time by accentuating the positives as they say.
Firstly we are sure that all Forfar Athletic supporters, in fact all Forfarians were delighted this week when our long standing main shirt sponsor Orchard Timber Products Ltd latterly part of the National Timber Group were saved from closure with the takeover by the Central Scotland based Beatson group. Further news on that front as time progresses.
More great news for Athies supporters on the field of play this time is the fact that Craig Slater has taken a full part in two training sessions this week and returns to the match day squad. Whether he takes his place in the starting line-up will however be a late decision for the management and medical teams. Stuart Morrison is also now well on the way to recovery and could be available for Elgin’s visit next Saturday, while Marc McCallum continues to win his battle back to full fitness. Finally Matty Allan and Angus Mailer who both had to leave the ‘battle field’ in the second half at Galabank last weekend due to a leg knock and illness respectively have both made a full recovery ahead of the visit of the Capital City outfit. Jim Weir felt that the loss of Gus early in the second 45 at Annan was a major factor in the eventual score line, the gritty midfielder feeling so ill in fact at the time that he had to forego the players Christmas outing across to Newcastle after the game and return home!
For Edinburgh City it is the second week running they will have ‘trod the boards’ at the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park, having played out a 1-1 draw with the ‘Loons’ a week past Tuesday in the KDM Evolution Trophy, prior to the home side progressing thanks to a penalty shoot out success.
The ‘Citizens’ of course began the season with a fifteen point penalty hanging over them following an SPFL ruling on an insolvency issue, but now following six wins and five draws from their sixteen completed fixtures they sit within six points of Stirling Albion at the foot of the table. Jim Weir has no doubt that City are one of the best footballing sides in the division and knows that the ‘Loons’ will have to be at their very best to record a win over a visiting side who have won three and drawn two of the handful of league contests between the sides in recent times. The visitors will also be on a mission to put a slightly surprising 4-1 home defeat to Clyde last Saturday behind them.
Hopefully the home side though will as the first half of the campaign comes to a conclusion give their ever faithful supporters some early Christmas cheer on the day prior to Santa heading ‘doon the lum’ in midweek.
The referee on Saturday is Joel Kennedy who is making his first appearance at Forfar since late June when he handled our pre-season clash with Montrose.
